The book of 1 Timothy is a book of the New Testament of the Bible which originated as a letter from Paul to a man named Timothy in the city of Ephesus, Turkey. Timothy was a relatively young but passionate leader in the Church of Ephesus, but he was facing some challenges with which Paul wanted to help. I like to consider 1 Timothy a book on New Testament doctrine. That may sound a bit boring, but trust me it isn’t! To the contrary it is quite fascinating seeing the struggles of the young church in learning how to deal with its new relationship with God and its independence from the strictures and formality of the Law. The principle lesson I take away from 1 Timothy is this: God is immensely more intelligent and complicated than we can fathom. We can argue endlessly about the details of his reign and our servitude, but in the end it doesn’t matter and can actually be destructive. Love God with all of your heart, don’t stress the details, leave those to God, and shine your light to the world.

THE “PROBLEM” – We human beings naturally perceive weakness and insecurity to be a “problem”. I believe that we can see from Scripture that weakness and insecurity can actually be a blessing. It is an opportunity to access the life and strength of Jesus Christ.

BLESSING does not come without bearing the burden a godly people are called to bear. The promise of a pure and perfect creation – where nothing unholy can exist – where the Lord Jesus, our Davidic King is worshipped in all glory and majesty – is realised only when a great cost is borne. This is something we have to be prepared to die for.

The LORD, himself, Yahweh, is empowering the people to be like a “battle horse” driven by but one purpose: speed… to run headlong, with audacity, into battle. No fear is present in this people who trust their God, as the martyrs have century after century over the corpus of Christian history.

GOD is a paradoxical power for life in so many ways. Those who hate God cannot stand the idea that God makes the truth operate in upside down, or apparently ridiculous, ways. They refute such things and are never blessed. But those who are open to God will be open to experiencing things like the unequivocal strength in acknowledging weakness.

I will start with the assumption that those persons who claim to have seen God are either lying, deluded, or have in fact seen God but cannot prove it to others who are not as lucky to have had this spiritual vision. I will start with a favorite quote from Descartes the father of Geometric Mathematics. “Nothing can be proved or disproved by unproved principles”.

ZECHARIAH is an unusual book. It is part apocalypse (revelation), but its first half calls more on prophesy than on the eschaton (last things), but it is considered by some to be a realised eschatology. Its second half calls more on the eschaton, with each chapter slightly different from perspective, but it’s less apocalyptic. Of course, chapters 7 and 8 divide the book; the first half comprising chapters 1-6, the second half encompassing chapters 9-14.

You may think that you are getting nowhere, but look again. Our journey might be inefficient, but if we walk with Jesus, then the road becomes secondary.

BLUNDERBUSS, an awkward-loading rifle, fires its projectiles as effectively as any when it’s loaded adequately, by its design. It’s no ineffective weapon, unless it’s pitted against an automatic rifle like an AK47. Unlike rifles, we’re all created for God’s glory, and yet there’s the full range of weaponry for the Kingdom at God’s disposal – in us, as a church, as we are. Still, we are who we are. And we’ve landed in some pretty sticky situations in life. That stickiness is thick and effusive right now. It’s on the nose. You’re left wondering why… why me… why now… why does it have to be this way?

As children and adults dress up in costumes and don their masks so that they can celebrate Halloween, I think about the masks we often believe that we need to wear to gain recognition and acceptance in this world. Consider the world of work, social circles, and even our personal lives. How often do we wear masks that portray what we believe is required and hide how we are really feeling or what we truly believe? How often do we pretend to be something we aren’t in order to advance or to gain approval from those in power or with whom we seek acceptance or inclusion? How often do we sublimate our beliefs and values in order to fulfill the requirements of a role we believe we need to fill?

NEW TESTAMENT buffs are to be forgiven for being totally perplexed by the Twelve – the Old Testament prophets. Reading them through our typically Western eyes, through our cultural lenses for technology, of materialism and education, and for an individualistic dialect of comfort, we are quickly puzzled by scriptural riddles. But many New Testament concepts appear lurking just underneath the prophets. The prophets reveal the same principles that the New Testament does. The Old Testament illuminates the New Testament, but only if we’re curious enough to find out.
