The whole notion of sinning has a unique psychology to it, and it probably began when someone came up with rules and regulations for conduct in society. In general, no-nos have been in place throughout history when different societies frowned upon certain behaviors that those in charge of that society considered uncool. Considering all the horrors that mankind has suffered and perpetrated on each other through the ages, it seems to me that He would have gotten a message by this point in humanity’s plight that it is virtually impossible not to sin and that we, as mere mortals, cannot or should not be held to such heavenly standards regardless of His intention with the angels.

When you think of all the problems in the world and within ourselves, if you think about it deeply it really all stems down to one thing – separation. Fear, anxiety, jealousy, depression, and so on, occur because the ego (separate identity) wants to express itself – it wants to matter, so no matter what the situation, it positions itself to be known, to be heard. The ego is the part of our mind that tells us “I am separate” in a million different ways, like victimization, vanity, unworthiness, guilt, shame and many other manifested forms. Likewise, our sense of separation creates resistance to others and their views or feelings. In order to be “right” our ego makes those that don’t agree with us, “wrong”. This separation expands out to all our relationships, and then to our communities, mankind and the world.

God reaches out to us at every opportunity. The Holy Spirit offers guidance and discernment, and reveals God’s will to us. All we have to do is listen. So, why doesn’t God stop us when we don’t listen to Him? Why doesn’t God stop our naked march down life’s busy street? The answer is love.

I received an email a week ago from the brother of two students I had a few years back. He wanted to meet with me to discuss his career options.
