Why don’t people change in advance of trouble? Why does it always seem to take a calamity, divorce, firing, illness, disaster before people say, “gee maybe I’m stuck and not making myself or others happy?” Lets see.

Now we’re not talking small measure. The research is extensive. Your buying choices, brand selection, prejudices and alignments are mostly becoming preconditioned Pavlovian responses. They hold up a red cloth, the same colour as a coke can, you salivate and get thirsty, not for water or pepsi, for coke. It’s so drilled in, most people think less about that connection than about the next breath they take.

“At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land” Mark says (15.33), and after three hours of darkness Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” What happened during those three hours of darkness is not known but we can hazard a guess. God’s children, His beloved creation, had put to the cross His one and only son. In that moment, goodness departed from men’s hearts and God departed from the earth. It is one of the clearest indications we have that God thrives on our love. No, he doesn’t just thrive on it, but He relies on it and we rely on it. Without it, He must depart, for that is the law He created.

Our world teaches us plenty about who we are. Perhaps we see this in people, family, friends, colleagues, strangers and other visible creations of God. One way or the other we are looking into a mirror and seeing something new about who we are. There is another way of discovering new things about us and this is by examining the spirit within us.

It is clear that for one to get something, one must give something. For one to receive, one has to give. What you give determines what you will receive in return. The Bible says the measure you use to give is the same used for you to receive.

As people of God, we are a people of vision and hope. Without a fresh vision of our God, we will have no hope. And without hope, we will have no reason to live and die for. Knowing who our God is, if not the best, is one of the best preparations to face the new year ahead. Because through the Lord our God, we can face the future with bold confidence and living hope.

Our decisions apart from God – a.k.a. our wisdom – is foolishness. We go our own way myriad times to the most certain of peril. Let’s consider three salient very personal examples…

Christians are sometimes viewed as outcasts in society especially when we stay true to our calling and when we do not compromise our life standards. The adage really rings true. It is easy to be a Christian but it is very hard to live the Christian life. Those redeemed by the Lord Jesus Christ have a sovereign purpose, and it will take supernatural intervention from God for us to take hold of our special future and live out our life’s purpose – which is to glorify God in our lives.

The Lord’s servant is first and foremost avoiding “stupid” and “senseless” controversies. The intent is not a lack of resolve to address matters of knowledge, and lacks thereof, but it’s in the understanding that those arguing often argue without cause but their own winning esteem – ah, the classic false teacher re-emerges!

We cannot enjoy life without learning how to live it well – indeed to learn how to learn; that is to know what it’s really about. But, there are barriers to it. It looks unrewarding to go there – to learning. It looks like a lot of effort for not much. But, the Thankfulness Branch takes us to learning and its RICH rewards.
