All That I Have is Thine
The story goes that the young man who had left home and wasted his inheritance returned home humbled and grateful. His father celebrated his return without a trace of punishment or rebuke.
The First PreceptConsidering war in relation to the first Buddhist precept. Besides causing the destruction of life and resources, war inflicts cruelties and untold suffering. To live in peace is an ideal of Buddhism, as indeed it is of all religions.
Jesus – Sign Up Or Show UpSigning up is easy, partly because it focuses on results. Everyone wants the same positive results, so it’s pretty easy to enlist support when all it takes is a name on the petition. We all like being associated with the outcomes of worthy causes. Showing up is different.
Focus on the Positive Side of LifeAll people should be focused on the positive things in life. By adopting that mindset, the universe becomes a much easier and more loving place to live. Spirit speaks to us in this message, which some of you may find a little different. Read more to find out what is on their mind.
My Dad’s Death – To Every Thing There is a SeasonDeath is such an elusive experience. We all experience it, but I doubt if anyone truly understands it. We plan for it, and but I don’t think it’s ever quite what we imagine. Like most sons, I always saw Dad as a bit larger than life. It’s still difficult to get my mind around the reality that he’s gone.
Sheep and the Good ShepherdWe were created to follow God. We weren’t designed to “stand on our own two feet.” Whenever we try to tackle life on our own, ignoring God’s instructions, we’re going to get it wrong. Sometimes, like sheep, we follow the herd without asking whether it’s going in the proper direction. Sometimes we wander off on our own until we encounter danger from which we can’t escape. When we don’t follow the good shepherd, we’re likely to get in trouble.
Practicing Trust!Trust; such an apparently simple word, it is all based on experience, on the deep knowledge of the object of trust, on understanding the intricacies, the controversies, the deep secrets, the minute detail of what to expect of that object; then there can be trust. How can I know that my brother can or cannot betray me if I do not know his heart, or how can I be willing to climb on a tree if I don’t know if it can hold my weight? How can I!
Jesus – Compass Or Map?I’m struck by how frequently Christians get caught up in style and forget substance. At times we all become immersed in form and doctrine and liturgy, and we lose sight of Jesus’ simple message of love. But especially for people who struggle for freedom from a tragic past, the awareness that God values essence over appearance might be overwhelming. Completely transparent intimacy intimidates everyone to some extent, but that sense of total vulnerability can overwhelm someone who faces despair and regret. When I’m ashamed of the past and depressed about the present, how can I possibly look to God with hope?
Why Should We Believe in God?For most people Christians and none Christians alike there comes a time in our lives that we ask ourselves the question why we should believe in God. What follows next is who is God? Why do some people believe in a God they have never seen and want others to?
Is the End of the World Around the Corner?Given the drastic change in climatic conditions over the last ten years more often than not in society today we are weary of the end of the world. Science has proven to us that our cause for concern is not unfounded. It has proven to us that we have the right to worry about our actions, starting by controlling fuel emissions and searching for a green environment.
Your Legacy – A Trust FundHow do you think will people remember you? This is a trick question and I’ll get to why in a moment. Here are some possible answers – I did the best I could… I never quite made it… they probably won’t remember me at all… if only I’d made the right choices, my life would’ve been so different… that I had great kids…that was there when they needed me.
Wisdom of MiraclesI was watching a video the other day that was showing a woman who lived in India producing a miracle. That was fine and dandy, but the point I would like to make today can be applied to almost any religion or spiritual practice in the world. Was this or wasn’t this actually a miracle?
