Transcending the ego does not mean that ego should be seen as something bad, evil, or as a separate entity that needs to be discarded or nullified in order for you to evolve. Transcending the ego means “moving beyond” or “rising above” the ego. Even when ego transcendence is acquired, you’ll probably still retain some degree of self-identification or ego within your personality. And that’s perfectly fine. Our end goal, therefore, should not be ego transcendence in and of itself, but rather a much more heightened and expansive level of Self awareness.

Taking the time to truly understand how to be “centered” is a key skill in living with inner peace. When you begin to meditate or pursue a spiritual path, you frequently hear the words “Remain centered” but it is rare for the speaker to follow up with an explanation of what being “centered” actually means.

Oxytocin has become known as the love hormone, and numerous studies have shown that doses of oxytocin in the brain can influence our empathetic instincts, or our ability to develop close relationships. It is only a small step from there to establishing a chemical basis for spirituality and heaven on earth. Spirituality is primarily about love and sharing, an invisible communal glue, and Christian spirituality is a living, working, powerful tool which encourages individuals to do good. Community spirit, good conscience, helpful attitude, concern for fellow man, all are popular terms often dismissed as woolly, liberal statements straight out of the do-gooder’s manifesto. In fact, empathy is a real and useful quality which counteracts our selfish, self-seeking instincts. Decision makers loaded with empathy would come up with fruitful and satisfying initiatives that cater to the community as a whole.

We will have the capacity for strength and courage when we need it. God will see to that. At these times, obedience is predictable but, nonetheless, commendable. We should revere the memory of the September 11 heroes and heroines who epitomised unenviable courage and obedience.

When we desire something, we first have to work for it. Often we find ourselves spending a large amount of mental energy thinking about it, wishing for it and wanting it to happen. But after working for it, we should let go and just be.

When we think about our lives, the people in our lives, the work we go to, the city we live in, the galaxy we’re a part of and the whole universe, we think of it as so real, tangible, ever present and everlasting. But because we perceive it in our minds and we can only perceive that which our minds can grasp, it’s actually a very small universe. It is also transitory – it doesn’t last. It only lasts and exists when we think about it. If we see it as a dream then we can locate truth.

As we go through life, sometimes we have beautiful experiences. They are so wonderful that we are filled with a desire to hold onto them for as long as possible. But why we can’t hang onto them and why they go away is because we can only remember them in the mind.
