I’ve been re-reading a translation of the Shiva Sutras, an text from the tradition of Kashmir Shaivism. One of the sutras reads, “Nothing exists that is not Shiva.”

We are so wrapped up in worrying about the behaviour of a minority of priests, or the conflicts in our churches, that sometimes we forget this simple truth: God equals freedom. In our right and wise minds we listen with obedient intent, clamouring past the thought of how at times ho-hum it is.

Desires are normal. We have the healthy desire to eat, drink and even to make love to our partners. But the motioning of life often pushes our intent beyond reason. This is the aberrant desire; it goes beyond God’s safe boundaries.
